Hallow Dear,

The looses motions you are having seem to be a side effect of the antibiotics you are receiving; particularly if you are receiving Amoxicillin group of the antibiotics. Once your diarrhoea is controlled after the course of antibiotics, your nutrition also will improve.

Persistent cough for more than a month is an issue of concern; particularly if you are from the eastern part of the world where tuberculosis is a prominent disease in the society. If this course of antibiotics does not get you relief, please get investigated for tuberculosis. Now a days, quick DNA tests are available for tuberculosis diagnosis.

Also please get your blood examined to assess your white cell count which may give some indication of the cause of persistent cough.

I hope this helps you at this stage.

OBGYN Dr. Jacqueline Brown's  Response
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Having loose bowel movements or even diarrhea is common after taking antibiotics for another type of infection, whether you are pregnant or not.

However, there is no reason to be concerned about the baby getting enough nutrition as long as you can eat and drink liquids. A full term infant only needs 300 calories a day to live, and unless you are severely malnourished, the baby can even get what it needs temporarily from your body's fat stores.

It is especially important to drink enough water- all pregnant women are recommended to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day, but since you lose more water with diarrhea, you should try to drink more than that. And try to eat bland, starchy foods until your diarrhea resolves, which will usually take place after you finish your antibiotic treatment.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
