What Causes Persistent Cough Along With Shortness Of Breath?

My husband who is a non smoker has had a biopsy today on his lung as the dr s found abnormality from a chest x-ray - he has had an ongoing cough (no blood though) and no weight loss - no loss of appetite - but he has had a shortness of breath - I m just wondering what it could be - other than the dreaded cancer? Blood test also revealed nothing

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Persistent cough along with shortness of breath may result from some pathological conditions such as copd or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease includes chronic bronchitis which can cause persistent cough and emphysema which can cause shortness of breath, asthma, Allergies, pneumonia, pneumothorax, pulmonary embolism, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis, tuberculosis, pleurisy, lung cancer, sarcoidosis, congestive heart failure, gastroesophageal reflux disease etc.

Treatment depends on causes. Your husband should undergo some investigations such as HRCT or MRI of chest, ecg, echo, pulmonary function tests, arterial blood gases analysis, barium swallow test and his already done lung biopsy report will help to find out the underlying causes for his present sufferings and then treat them accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
