What Causes Pelvic Pain When On Mirena IUD?

Hi, I ve had the mirena iud in for over year now. Occasionally I get left sided pelvic pain a few days before or during my period. Other than that, no issues. Aside from the weight gain. My periods are light and irregular. Blood is always a dark or light brown and consists of spotting for 5-7 days. Never heavy. Today, I noticed a bright red bleeding when wiping, along with the usual brownish blood I get. Should I be concerned? I have slight cramping/pressure in my lower pelvic region, but nothing unbearable. And the blood is minimal.

OBGYN, Maternal and Fetal Medicine 's  Response
Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Mirena IUD contains progesterone hormone and can lead to irregular menstrual period due to its effects. Moreover, it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease which causes pelvic pain and irregular bleeding.
I would suggest you to consult an OBGYN specialist to get properly examined, investigated and treated accordingly.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.
