What Causes Passing Of Blood Clots And Spotting During Periods?

I have always been regular with my menstral cycles my entire life. Every 28 days. Heavy flow at first, lightens up mid cycle. No spotting in between. Past 2 months, cycle has been very strange. Mild bleeding entire cycle, nickle size blood clots, shortened length, spotting in between (brownish, pink). Also some pieces of tissue in toilet after unrinating. Something is definitely not right.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Spotting / irregular periods occurs commonly due to hormonal imbalance. Since your bleeding is continuous and with clots, I would suggest you to visit your gynaecologist. You may require treatment with anti-fibrinolytics and hormonal pills in order to reduce the clots in menstrual blood.

Anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen or mefenamic acid can also reduce clots and abdominal cramping by inhibiting a chemical called prostaglandin. After controlling the bleeding and clots, the cause should be identified. I would recommend taking a pelvic ultrasound, thyroid function test, complete blood count

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
