What Causes Painful Swelling In The Joint, Appetite Loss And Difficulty In Walking?

Hello, I am currently trying to find information on what my grandfather (65 years old) might have. He is experiencing joint pain and swelling, lack of grip (no longer has the strength to hold things) and the ability to walk, loss of appetite, and signs of depression. He also has recently quit smoking and drinking (he has been doing both since his teens). He currently resides in Mexico and no doctor has been able to give him a definitive diagnosis. What could he possibly have?

Hi,

Loss of grip, pain and swelling in the joints with alcohol history may be due to hypoproteinemia with gout or inflammatory arthritis.

Beriberi (wet type), cardiac failure or electrolyte imbalance or anemia with B12 deficiency etc.

Possible with stroke or parkinsonism etc.

Please get it done liver function tests, ECG, serum uric acid, MRI brain and hemoglobin status.

Please consult your physician, he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
