What Causes Painful Swelling In Ankles And Feet Post L4/L5 Fusion Surgery?

I had L4/L5 fusion surgery on 2/4/16. Three days ago I noticed my ankles and feet were getting swollen. Now they are getting so swollen they are painful. I am being told by my doctor s PA that swelling in the feet and ankles is common after this type of surgery. Is this something I should be concerned enough about to go to the ER?

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have painful swelling in ankles and feet post L4/L5 fusion surgery . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like soft tissue injury , hematoma , nerve injury or compression . The symptoms can also occur due to post surgery complication , so also visit surgeon for that .I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper diagnosis . Doctor may order CT scan , MRI along with nerve conduction test . Doctor may prescribe anti inflammatory along with nerve supplement and recommend physical therapy . Doctor may also recommend surgery in severe nerve damage . For now keep your leg elevated while sleeping and applt warm compresses several times a day .
