Red eye is the most common symptom encountered by an eye specialist. Sore itchy tearing red eyes points to
1. conjuntivits. pt usually have discharge too. Better to start on a antibiotic i.e moxifloxacin and artificail tears i.e CMC in case of infective.
A ropy discharge points to allergic conjunctivitis and can be treated with an antihistaminic like olapatadina and ketorolac with CMC. Steriod drops like lotepred can be added for a week in case of severity.
2. Iritis. pt have predominantly intolerence to light with red eyes. can start a low dose steriod like loteped and cycloplegic like cyclopentolate for comfort from ciliary spasms.
3. There are other causes like scleritis and glaucoma
But I feel its an Infective conjunctivitis as it goes more with the history.
Hope it helps you
