What Causes Pain/soreness In Throat With Swollen Tonsils?

Hello I am a 23year old woman who for the first time is experiencing severe throat pains in the mornings and it feels very sore to swallow. This passes during the day but gets worse at night and in the morning. My tonsils are slightly swollen and my uvula is twice its normal size. Apart from a few body aches I have no other symptoms except for a very red throat and an uncomfortable sesation when swallowing. What could this be?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It is typical tonsillitis. Antibiotics will be the treatment of choice and a short course of antibiotics may be started preferably amoxiclav. Do warm saline gargles for symptomatic relief.

If symptoms persist better to consult an ENT specialist and get evaluated. If you experience repeated attacks, surgical removal of the tonsils( tonsillectomy) can be considered.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
