What Causes Pain On The Feet?

I have a painful foot top of foot suddenly coming on when seated at a table teaching theory to a pupil. I possibly had my shoe strapped (one velcroe strap on fairly comfortable shoe) too tightly-but other foot fine. On this particular leg of painful foot I frequently get aches especially at night from varicose veins. Sometimes sudden cramping pains too. Could the foot pain be related? Should I have something done about my varicose veins also? I am a healthyish 54 year old who does average exercise and eats fairly well. Height 5 ft 6and a half and weight 8 and a half stone -thanks
