What causes pain in the windpipe upon breathing?

When I woke up this morning I noticed that when I take a deep breath I feel pain in my windpipe area. I feels very similar to when you swim for a long time and feel pain when you take a deep breath. I do not have a cough and the pain seems to increase when I lean forward. Why is this?

Wind pipe is not painful when breathing normally. Pain indicates that there is a problem. This is mainly from the vocal cords -larynx- to the bronchioles -small unit part of the lungs.

This is mainly caused by infection leading erosions of the superficial layers of the areas and causing soreness. Pain killers, antibiotics will take care of that. In case you smoke or stay in polluted areas this can contribute and you need to minimize contact with smoke.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
