What causes pain in the right ankle?

hello. I would like to know what could be the cause of my inner right ankle pain. The pain is right on my bone and it extends upward sometime on my leg and also in the heel area. I have take Ibproubein and extra strength tylenol for pain, the pain is still there. I went to an ER the other day, the attending physician prescribed Tramadol. I am skeptical about taking this medication as I understand it is a narcotic and can be addicted. The prescription is for 50mg and the qty is 20. I have tried a lot of pain medications and remedies for my pain relief, so far, nothing has work. Can you please give me some advice on this tramadol medication as I stated, I am concern with it being a narcotic.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Do not worry about your ankle joint pain.
1.Since it is a weight bearing point of the body, any infection or any ligament problem, will give rise to pain.
2.You can try Tramadol ,it is of no harm,if you have severe pain.Short term Tramadol in take will not cause any addiction.
3.You consult your orthopedic doctor and go for physiotherapy ankle joint exercises.
4.Can wear ankle guard for sometime permanently.
5.Local pain applications in form of gel or oil followed by hot water fermentation.
6.If any joint infection is suspected due to any ligament tear ,then antibiotic with anti inflammatory drugs to be taken.
7.Investigate for gout-- protein deposit in the ankle joint ,that will cause ankle joint pain-- check your uric acid levels and consult your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
