What Causes Pain In The Left Side Of The Head And Numbness In The Left Side Of The Face?

My 35 year old fit and usually healthy daughter has a headache on the left side of her head and numbness on the left side of her face from her eyes to her chin and no recent injury. The instacare Doctor doesnt think it is a stroke, and referred her to a neurologist. Is the an urgent problem?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

A one-sided headache and numbness may be a sign of a migraine. Normally migraine headaches are one-sided and accompanied by occasional bouts of nausea. It is aggravated by the loud noise and bright light.

I would advise you to get her checked by a neurologist for proper diagnosis. If she has a migraine, then she may have to take medical therapy for it. Most common drugs used for a migraine are Triptans, Ergot alkaloids or NSAIDs.

For now, she can take an over the counter painkiller like Ibuprofen for temporary pain relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nazma.Amman
