What Causes Pain In The Fingers And Knees After Chemotherapy?

I have just finished more than a year of treatment for breast cancer (two surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and additional Herceptin). In the last few weeks (2-3) the pain in my fingers, knees and feet has become much more intense. What should I do first?

Hi there,

It sounds like this is neuropathic pain, which is likely a side effect from the chemotherapy. I see a lot of breast cancer patients as a general surgeon, and this is a very common complaint I get. I'd recommend trying gabapentin (neurontin) which will help with this type of nerve pain. I usually start patients on 300mg three times a day, and can go up to 900mg three times a day.

I'd also talk to your medical oncologist and see if he or she had any thoughts. But my advice would be trying gabapentin for this type of pain.

I hope I have answered your question. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
