What Causes Pain In The Feet?

My husband has been having horrible pain in his foot. He thinks it s gout but there is no redness or swelling. What else could it be and what should I look for? I have been an EMT for 12 years so I know what gout looks like-I am just not seeing any signs of anything on the outside other than his pain.

Hello,

Pain on the foot can be due to several causes. Gout as you mention does cause swelling, redness and the area to feel hot so if none of these is present very likely it is not gout.

Depending on the age of your husband and the location of the pain other causes can be suspected. Ostheoarthritis causes pain in the joints but no generally no swelling or redness and the area is not hot, also if he had a trauma of the foot, sprained ankle it might cause pain in the area. If the pain is in the bottom of the foot then plantar fasciitis can be the case.
If the pain is up the shins and the back of the leg then other causes like varicose veins or thrombosed veins can be the cause.

He will need a good examination with his doctor to better determine the cause of the pain and take the proper treatment.

I hope I have answered to your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
