Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello. My son is having pain in his ears and is also showing blood after using a q tip inside the ear. He was water skiing and wakeboarding last week and was told he probably has swimmers ear. I am very concerned because of the blood inside of his ear. He is about 5 hours away at a week long summer camp and was taken to the ER earlier today but was not seen by a physician because I could not be reached. Should I call his pediatrician asap? Or should he go back to the ER?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Thanks for the query. I understand your concern. Yes it's likely to be a swimmer's ear... added symptoms of bleeding could be an attempt to clean ear with a cotton tip stick , which eventually injured the inflamed inner lining of external ear. Such injury increases risk of bacterial of fungal infection . Considering this I feel he needs antibiotics/ anti inflammatory medicines in addition to ear drops & probably cleaning of ear by a specialist. With the complaints he has.. he should not continue swimming till ear is healed...( & in future he should prevent such problem with use of head ap or properly fitting ear buds.)... he should be taken home & given treatment under ENT doctor...in order to prevent complications. Thanks
