Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I woke up in the middle of the night with some pain in my anus. I have experienced this at times following a bowel movement but this came out of nowhere in my sleep. Lasted for maybe 5 to 10 minutes then I apparently went back to sleep. With the pain after a bowel movement I had read somewhere that cramping can occur at times during a movement and not a big deal. Is it a big deal?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
In most cases, this type of pain is caused by benign anorectal issues and includes hemorrhoids, anal fissure or rectal polyps. These are primarily treated with stool softener, diet, and sitz baths. If there is no improvement in next few weeks, then surgical management should be considered.
Other causes may be more serious and include tumors or inflammatory bowel diseases and these should be ruled out with colonoscopy which must be done if there is low blood count present or rapid weight loss. Otherwise, you can see if conservative therapy will help and consult a proctologist if necessary.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
