What Causes Pain In The Abdomen After Taking Sucralfate?

Hi I started taking Sucralfate about to treat my stomach that suddenly became hot, painful an affecting my daily living. I have avoid going out to lunch with several fellow retirees who have a luncheon weekly. Last week the pain in my hot stomach was a 7 so my wife and I went to the ER at Sparrow hospital. Because I had gone there a week earlier hoping to get rid of the hot, burning stomach and esophagus. The doctor I saw gave me a prescription for the bottle of which says C-LIDDOCAINE/MTLANTA 1P:1 2% POSOL . It came with an applicator to draw 100 milliters into and then push the liquid into the back of my mouth. My question relates to use of both meds. The Sucralfate was prescribed by a Gastro doctor and told me to make a slurrey of the pill and 100 milliters of water and then to swallow it to provide a coating on the lining of my esophagus and stomach. I am taking it 4 times per day I was told it may take two weeks for the coating to be fully effective. I have been taking it for three weeks. My wife and I are not clear on how take both. The Sucralfate says to wait at least 1 hour before drinking any liquid or eating food. So I start the day with the first slurrey of Sucralfate and wait an hour before taking a dose of 100 milliters of the Lidocaine mixture, which clearly has a numbing feeling to my esophagus and stomach. We have developed a schedule so I can eat and drink pills and some food. The burning stomach has left me with little appetite so I have dropped 20 pounds in the last month. I would appreciate info regarding the routine we are using. Which med should we start the day with? Are we correct in taking them at least one hour apart? Some days I have been able to make 4 doses. If I only work in 4 and three, which med is more important to take. I have not been taking either from 10pm to 7am when a new day is started. Thanks, Dave Kilgren

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

As you already consulted with gastroenterologist and advised Sucralfate for stomach problems; I think it may be peptic ulcer. So kindly do upper GI endoscopy to rule out H. pylori infection after consultation. You can take syp. Mucaine gel, tab. Pantoprazole and tab. Domperidone after consultation. Avoid spicy and hot food. Take light and soft diet.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
