What Causes Pain In Head On Coughing After A Head Injury?

Hi, I recently fell off of a horse and hit my head. I got a concussion test and a CAT scan done and everything has come back normal. However, ever time I cough I get a horrible pain on one side of my head (the side that hit the wall and ground). What does this mean?

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. This headache occurring at injury site after coughing could be due to sudden vigorous shaking of head and leading to pain sensation in already hypersensitive area post traumatic site. The site becomes hypersensitive due to inflammation (reaction) and sometimes collection of blood/swelling of soft tissue after injury.

This inflammation is good for healing. It subsides on its own in 10-14 days.

As your CT scan was normal and you are conscious, oriented, no need to worry. For pain relief, you can follow few tips
: Apply icepacks at injury site.
: Take painkiller like Diclofenac sodium after proper prescription.
If still no relief, you should consult doctor.

Hope it will help you. Thanks. Take care.
