What causes pain in and around ear?

Hi - last week I flew on vacation - upon landing both my ears and above my eyes hurt. I began taking antibiotics. The next day I was diving with no discomfort. The next 5 days also included diving with no problems. I only had antibiotics enough for 2 days. After 1 week vacation I flew back and when we were descending my right ear made a sound like a bang and it was very very painful. Since then the area around the ear have been sore, my hearing less and small constant pain in the ear. Do you think the pain will disappear or should I see a doctor? best regards, Claus

Hi,

Your symptoms looks like Ear Barotrauma, one of the cause for it is flight ascent of descent. During this time there is sudden change in air pressure which is the cause for pain and discomfort. In severe cases where pressure remains high for a longer time can cause eardrum damage or ruptured eardrum. However it is not commonly seen.

The pain also resolves gradually after the pressure is reduced. But if you have experienced a bang and then there is reduced hearing, it should be addressed. You should get an ear examination done by an ENT Physician to see if there us any damage to eardrum or if there is any inflammation or infection inside the ear. According to that further advise can be given.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
