What Causes Pain During Urination?

For the past year on and off I have had a lot of pain peeing, i noticed it is after i drink alcohol, or did not drink more than 4 glasses of water in a day. It also can get very smelly for up to a week or so, even after drinking tons of water and no alcohol. is this normal?
