What Causes Pain During Any Movement After Injuring Ribs?

I fell and injured my ribs. Although I know this is a painful injury I am concerned about the amount of pain I am experiencing and wonder if I may need an X-ray. I can not get a deep breath. Any movement is painful...sitting, standing, lying down, are all painful. Even as much as clearing my throat or raising my voice is painful. It has been close to 72 hours since my fall and all movement is tough. I saw my Doctor and he said that he wouldn t treat this injury any different even with an x-ray. I am concerned that I may have something more internal than just rib damage. I have intense burning up under my shoulder blades that seems to be getting worse is this normal broken rib pain ar might there be something more?

Hi,

1. As there is a history of trauma, thus following is my opinion [since I'm unable to examine you directly]:
1. Pain could be a pleural pathology. Ask for a chest X-ray to exclude rib fracture, pleuritis, pneumothorax, pleural effusion.
2. If the investigations come normal, take the opinion of a medical specialist.

3. If by adopting
- Hot water fomentation
- Rest with minimal movements
- Chest strapping
- Intercostal nerve block
- Taking an analgesic, anti-inflammatory enzymes, and muscle relaxant: the pain goes away continue with the same, however, if the pain is not relieved to ask for Hb%, WBC, ESR & X-ray Chest. At present consult your general physician who after reviewing your case history and physical examination will refer you to a specialist concerned.
4. Although most of the time, pain may be the result of a minor injury, however sometimes there may be an underlying medical condition that needs appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
