What Causes Pain And Swelling In The Ankle?

Hello! I hurt my ankle over 2 weeks ago in my soccer game and have been walking on it ever since. There has been a lot of pain especially when I run and it is very swollen. The swollen area is not squishy though it is hard like a bone maybe. Could you tell me what possible injury this could be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

This is a post-traumatic hematoma formation with possible cellulitis. Have to be very keen regarding it.
• Apply ice over it 3 times a day
• Avoid excess mobilization and tight shoes
• Keep the leg elevated to over 3 pillows when resting
• Temporary pain killers like Acetaminophen can help

Take an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible to get necessary antibiotics with anti-inflammatory agents required to cure this at earliest else you may have to end up with surgical consequences like incision and drainage also.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel
