What Causes Pain And Swelling Below The Knee Cap?

My son has been having knee pain for quite some time. Today he was warming up for a basketball game and when he came down on his knee he said its like something popped, it got hot and, started to burn. What could this be? the pain is right below the knee cap and is swollen. looks like the knee cap could be a little higher than the other one.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

From your description, your son seems to have injured the band the connects the knee cap to the prominence on the shin bone called the patella tendon.

This is very strong ligament but a violent stretch could tear it. This needs surgical repair as its responsible for straightening the knee.

He has been having knee pain for a long time which means a long-standing ligament injury with possibly weak knee muscles.

Needs to be iced, compression bandage applied and to consult a knee surgeon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr George Verghese, Orthopaedic Surgeon
