What Causes Pain And Swelling Around IV Insertion Site?
I went to the er a few weeks ago for chest pains I got an iv and everytime they put meds in my iv it burned back now 3 weeks later my arm is very so and swollen where the iv was and a hard lump and very tender and having headaches sense then should I be concerned
Hello, Welcome to HCM. I understand your concern. Having a vein flow inserted for 3 weeks and repeated intravenous infusions can lead to thrombosis of the vein. This is very common occurrence. You have already developed pain, tender lump and swelling around the vein. It is very likely that you have developed thrombosis of vein. You should go for removal of IV cannula from affected vein and get it inserted elsewhere if you still need to have IV infusions. You should apply anti-thrombotic cream (like Thrombophob ointment) over the affected vein. You should also get a course of antibiotic if there is any sign of local infection. Please talk with you treating doctor for further management.
Hope this will be helpful.
