What Causes Pain And Stiffness In The Hips And Feet?

Yes, I just would like to be able to put a name to my symptoms. I m 65, active, hike 8-10 miles a couple times a week. I m at ideal weight and on a plant-based diet for 7 years. I have been experiencing bone pain and stiffness with any change in position in my hip bones, feet, kneecaps. I also get random point- tenderness in various boney prominences like on my wristbone, kneecap and hips. There is no arthritis in my family. This all started after I finished chemo and was put on first Arimidex then Tamoxafin post lumpectomy in 2016. I had to quit the hormones due to the bone pains Could this be arthritis associated with these drugs? Does it ever go away? I am doing well otherwise but its annoying and requires me to take Ibuprofin at night which does help. What kind of doctor should I be asking to see? BTW, I am not on any medication Thank you!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is great to see people who put in time to stay fit. Generally, arthritis is not passed down in families, and the chemo should NOT ideally cause these symptoms. It is possible that you have developed arthritis as the knees and hips are most commonly involved.

1) Osteoarthritis is basically a degenerative condition where the wear and tear at the ends of bones causes pain.
2) There is no cure but a few things that you can do to minimize your discomfort.
3) Check out some physiotherapy exercises to strengthen the muscles around your knee and hip. You could easily do these at home or take the help of a professional. Remember to do slow movements during exercises.
4) Continue your routine activities, if it starts hurting, move slower, take it easy.
5) It is alright to take Ibuprofen occasionally. You could take Diclofenac with Serratiopeptidase otherwise.
6) The doctor you would need to meet to evaluate this further is an Orthopedician.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
