What Causes Pain And Redness In Gums?

Hi,the other day i was eating when i noticed between my bottom gums and lip were hurting me. its a dark red and hurts a lot whenever i eat or kiss my boyfriend. i figured i just cut my gums or the inside of my lip since i was eating chips. but its been a few days now and the pain is spreading across my bottom lip/gums. my friend (who is studying to be a nurse) thinks i just cut it but i dont see a cut or feel one. its very uncomfortable and i would like to know if there is anything i can do or take to make the pain go away so i can eat normally again. thank you.

Hi Dear,

Understanding your concern.

The symptoms you mention in query are pointing towards dental abscess .There can be many reason for occurrence like :-

Tooth infection that travels from cavity in tooth to the root tip of tooth .

Gum infection which travel down the root tip .

Trauma to tooth .

Clenching of tooth .

I would suggest you to :-

Do betadin and warm saline rinses 2-3 times a day .

Maintain proper oral hygiene .

Apply orabase gel for irritation and itching .

Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain and swelling.

consult dentist for proper examination .

Doctor may order X-ray to find out exact cause or to rule to condition like herpes or canker sore .

Doctor may perform root canal , drain the abscess or prescribe antibiotics .

In sever cases dentist preform procedure like apicoectomy .
