What Causes Pain And A Hole At Back Of The Throat Post Tonsillectomy?

I had a tonsillectomy and my adenoids removed 3 weeks ago and I thought everything was healing right until I noticed the right side of my soft palate was way higher than the left. When I yawn the right side right behind my uvula hurts. So one day I decided to feel where it hurt with my finger and noticed a huge hole to the right of my uvula. Is this normal? I am basically missing a big hunk of soft palate compared to the left side. I am really worried and I am wondering if it will grow back by itself or do I need a second surgery? I have a picture not sure if I can upload it to this thread

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of pain and a hole at back of the throat post tonsillectomy . It seems to me that there is inflammation secondary to infection after surgery in the throat leading to swollen uvula as well as swollen throat leading to narrowing of space in throat ,which appear as hole formation . It should be taken care of as if throat keeps on narrowing there can be difficulty in breathing and can become fatal .You should consult an ENT Surgeon without any delay and get evaluated and he can do a clinical examination and advise you to take antibiotics like levofloxacin, steroids to reduce swelling, warm saline gargles and if swelling is excessive he can inject intramuscular Dexamethasone for faster reduction in swelling. Also drink warm water with one spoon of honey in it.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
