There are different kinds of stabbing headaches, but the first i can think of corresponding to your description is cluster headache (HA), which is a primary HA which is rare, and happens more often in adult male smokers. Cluster HA is commonly one sided. The HA happens in clusters everyday for a number of days or even weeks. It disappears for months then, but can happen again.
To abort a HA you can use oxygen 100% by mask, or triptans (like sumatriptan) sbcutaneous or eegotamines intravenous. The prophylactic treatment consists of calciblockers (verapamil) more often and corticosteroids.
