What Causes Numbness In Thumb Of A 52 Year Old Smoker?

I have numbness along the side of my thumb that has lasted for over two weeks. I have no pain what so ever and no giggling . The numbness doesn t change any part of the day , doesn t have any discoloration at all, and hasn t affected my ability to do anything it just feel numb when I touch it. I have had no injury s but I do have arthritis that in the past causes some swelling and stiffness in the mornings (mostly when it s rainy or right before it s going to rain). It has been a long time since that has happened as I live in southern California. My question is what it could possibly be? Also, I should mention I am 52 years old and smoke a pack of cigarettes about every three days. My email is YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, it can be due to nerve entrapment or lesion and may need nerve conduction studies as well as local sensory nervous system examined by a neurologist or your primary care physician.

X-ray cervical spine, and sugar levels, thyroid profile may be needed alongwith B12 and folic acid levels though it doesn't usually present with single nerve involvement.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
