What Causes Numbness In Legs And Buttocks?

My husband has numbness in both legs, buttocks and private area but has no pain. He has an appointment with a surgeon but we were wondering what the cause could be. He had back surgery in 1987 in the lower part. At first it was hard for him to balance when he walked but with medication it is some better but the numbness is still there. What could be some of the causes?
