What Causes Numbness In Feet While Sleeping Or Sitting?

My feet go numb while I am sleeping or while I am sitting for long periods. Interestingly, if I am driving (for hours) this does not occur but if I am the passenger it does. Often, it is very difficult to walk when I get up in the night or get out of the passenger seat after long drives. I am 53 years old and in good condition.
