What Causes Noticeable Pauses In The Speech Of An Elderly Man?

Normal speech pattern is being disrupted with very noticeable pauses. I am a 71 year old male and my two adult children have brought this to my attention out of concern. My wife says she has not observed any change within the time frame (last year) that my children have observed this change. Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Based on your description of symptoms, I would recommend you to first consult ENT specialist for clinical evaluation of ear, nose and throat. If it is found to be normal, next I would recommend you to consult Neurologist for evaluation. Based on the findings, you may need speech therapy from a Speech Pathologist. In case everything seems to be normal, then you would only need reassurance that you need not worry about it.

Hope the information provided helps.
All the best.
Regards,
Dr.Ashakiran.S.
