What Causes Nightmares In Adults?

I wake up after a dream every night and I cannot breathe and ask myself if I m alive. My heart beats hard, I get the light on and then realize I m ok, but I get up and check the doors and windows and don t sleep anymore. Will this go away? I don t drink or use any drugs - I m too fearful it could get worse.
