What Causes Neck Pain When Turning To The Sides?

I am experiencing pain on the left side of my neck when I turn my head to the right and when turn my head to the left. have been doing neck and shoulder exercises several times daily, applying heat treatments, massaging my neck, with no relief. I have also resorted to using a rolled up bath towel instead of a pillow. What can be the cause? and what else can I do to relieve the pain?
