What Causes Nausea And Headache After Taking Tegretol?

I have been on tegretol for about a week, 200 mg twice a day, (400 mg) then after five days went up to 600, I have never felt so sick in my life. Headache, dizzy, nausea, hands and feet twitching. Have barely been able to get out of bed. And missed 3 days of work. Clearly I m not tolerating this medicine well. Are these side effects of the drug? We are in a snowstorm and my doctors office is closed. Rhank you!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Stomach upset with nausea is drug-induced gastritis, which can be managed with simultaneous intake of PPI as omeprazole or else.

The shaking and twitching are absolute side effects which warrant to stop further dose intake till you consult your doc for the alternative molecule or dose adjustment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel,
