What Causes Nasal Congestion And Nausea Despite Taking Dayquil And Nyquil?

Hi. I currently have UTI and a cold. I am taking antibiotics for my UTI, and I am taking dayquil and nyquil to relieve my cold. It's been 3 days since I went to the doctor and starting taking both pills. My doctor said that the cold isn't bacterial...but there may be a possibility it may turn bacterial. But it seemed like that was just the logical answer; said to go back the next day if I feel worse. In terms of the cold, I sneeze sometimes, have a stuffy nose, and my throat is clogged. But I can breathe fine. The next day wasn't too bad, It wasn't worse. The third day (today) I felt better in the morning. However, I started feeling really nauseous in the afternoon. As soon as I got home I went to bed (6 PM) and woke up at 10:30- 11 PM. I was still feeling nauseous and am throwing up. What is wrong with me, is this normal? >My UTI is also not completely healed...I'm still experiencing some symptoms like needing to go to the bathroom more frequently, and a little burning/dry feeling.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As you have mentioned, it has been just 3 days of taking antibiotics as well as Dayquil and Nyquil. You need not worry as the recovery is going on appropriately.

As you re taking dayquil and nightquil during day and night respectively, it is appropriate medicine for upper respiratory tract infection also known as common cold. You should continue taking it for 4 days.

Common cold can take around a week to cure and at times nausea can occur due to infection caused by excess cough and phlegm formation as well as congestion. Nausea can also be a side effect of medicines that you are taking.

As far as UTI is concerned, it is a bacterial infection of urinary tract and it can also take a week to resolve and for this also you need not worry as you have indicated that the symptoms are improving.

You can continue taking dayquil and nyquil and along with it do steam inhalations, warm saline gargles and avoid spicy and chilled foods.

You can suck throat lozenges. For UTI, continue taking antibiotics and drink plenty of water. Keep the genital area clean.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,

Dr. Honey Arora
