What causes my systolic and diastolic blood pressure to be close?

For the past 4 days, my blood pressure has been running anywhere from 130/95 to 120/102. My blood pressure is usually normal (typically 120/78 or so). I have high cholesterol and a family history of heart disease & am 51. What I don t understand is the numbers being close together. My last reading was 119/102.

I understand your concern and would explain that your diastolic blood pressure values are high and this could indicate the beginning or arterial hypertension. For this reason, I recommend you to closely monitor your blood pressure values in the next days.

If your blood pressure values are persistently high, I would recommend consulting with your attending physician for a physical exam and some tests:
- a resting ECG
- complete blood count, PCR, ESR for inflammation
- thyroid hormone levels for thyroid gland dysfunction
- blood electrolytes
- kidney and liver function tests
- blood lipid profile.

Starting anti-hypertensive therapy may be needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi, I am currently undergoing a Personal Training Qualification. Out of interest I decided just to have a try of the equipment and noted a normal Systolic of 120 with a low diastolic of around 52. I have taken this again today and note that I was 128/52. I consider myself to be exteremely fit and wonder if this is the reason why the diastolic is so low. Sometimes no knowledge is better a little knowledge and I start imaging things. Thanks

Suddenly my heart stops beating and comes back with a blow. I ve been having left side chest pain for quite a few years. My blood pressure used to be very low 80/60. But recently the systolic is normal 120 but the diastolic goes high like 90;100 and above. I m 22 years old female,5 feet 5.5 inch tall and weight around 57 to 59. I m under depression and stress. I ve been asked to do ECG three years ago due to chest pain. My high diastolic pressure is causing me physical problems. Should I be concerned?

My mother is 86 and her BP is registering as 150/48 or thereabouts. She is presently in hospital with a spinal stenosis and other age related problems. What could be the cause of such a huge range in pressure? Her pulse is around 65 normally but presently about 90. She is around 55 kilos

I am a 57 year old lady. Last year during a general check up my ECG revealed myocardial ischemia. My cholesterol and triglycerides levels were well within limits. I have been taking cardace 1.25 mg and ecosprin 75mg since then as advised by my physician. This year, that is on 2nd March I again opted for a general check up and found to my dismay that my total cholesterol (278 mg/dl) and triglycerides (189 mg/dl) levels had gone up. I have been now prescribed Lipikind. Also I have been given iron supplement as my Haemoglobin is 10.3 gms%. On the morning of 4th March (1 am to 2 am) I was having racing heart syndrome with heavy palpitation and very high pulse rate. My hands became numb and most part of my body had become cold. I became normal after 45 mts after my husband pressed/massaged my foot and leg. During the period when I had the syndrome I was constantly talking loudly about safety of my family etc. I visited the toilet immediately therafter and was completely relieved for the night. On the forenoon of 6th March around 11 am when I was just relaxing lying down after lunch the symptom of palpitation started. Immediately I pressed each palm with the other and massaged my fingers. The symptom died down after 10 minutes. My search on the Internet only shows that there are many out there having the symptom and have been living with it for even up to 3 years. But I just want to rule out some of the oft mentioned causes such as Thyroid problem, Magnesium deficiency and Mitral valve prolapse. I am told by a relative that a doctor in Mumbai says that this may be due to the new drugs (Lipidkind) I have started taking only some 4 days back and that this symptom will wear off soon. But please advise me.

My gynecologist recommended divinely several years ago since my cholesterol was showing it was up, (as are my triglycerides). I currently use 0.5mg. daily. I feel great, but I m concerned about my cholesterol and triglycerides. Should I go off HRT.
