What Causes Mucus In Stool?

I have been having mucus in my stool for approx. 2 months. I have always had some problems with constipation but have never had to take a laxative until twice in the last two months. Twice I have passed clear mucus...once before we went on a cruise to Mexico and once after. My doctor gave me one week of Bactrim to cover E coli. I am still having mucosa stools but they are not clear, light brown and not formed. Once the laxative works, I have no stools. My diet has change only in that I have stopped eating bread, milk, raisin bran and sweets. I am stumped as to what I need to change . My last colonoscopy showed only two polyps that were removed (last year). I would appreciate your help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Mucus in your stool is most probably due to chronic amoebiasis. Metronidazole thrice daily for 10 days is the drug of choice. Please consult your doctor for a prescription.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician
