Hi,

There are many causes for headache, but for a pain felt at back of the head, the important thing that you should first do is checking your blood pressure a few times, especially when you have headache. This is because we should rule out hypertension first.

-Then you should palpate various areas on your head as well as on your neck to see if there are some painful points there. Sometimes, one sided headache is due to painful spots on the head of neck (we call them trigger points). If you found painful spots, please refer to a rehabilitation specialist or a physiotherapist for that.

-If your blood pressure is normal and you do not have any painful spots, you should visit a neurologist. He/She might order a brain MRI to rule out other important problems.

After that, and after taking a thorough history and examination by a doctor, there could be many medications that can help you. Please take headache seriously, because sometimes it has a real important cause.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Hooman Mahmoudi, Neurologist
