What Causes Metallic Taste In The Mouth While On Levothyroxine?

My doc prescribe levothyroxine 50 mcg several weeks ago. I read all the instructions about how and when to take it . Since I had been very sick and could not get better for about 4 weeks (cold, sinus chest congestion), the doc checked my thyroid and the figures were low. I am 71 yr old female. After about 2 weeks, I began to get a terrible metallic taste in my mouth which turned the bumps on my tongue to swell and ooze and I had o taste whatsoever except the metallic taste and the liquid began to burn the inside of my mouth. By this time it was also making me nauseated. My doc was out of town for 3 wks. so I took a Benedryl which helped some but he now wants me to try the Levothyroxine again. I still have a sore tongue and feel terrified to even start the medicine again. ???

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that metallic taste in mouth, sore lumps over the tongue along with burning feeling seems to be due to Apthous Stomatitis leading to inflammation inside mouth and along with it there seems to be apthous ulcers or canker sores..
It can be a side effect of the medication Levothyroxine that you are taking..

I would suggest you to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like blood tests can help in diagnosis..
In case if the medication is ruled out to be a culprit then you should consult your treating physician and get evaluated and reducing dose of medication can help in reducing the symptoms..

As of now you can start gargling with a numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine to relieve the symptoms.
You can also take a multivitamin tablet daily..
You can take anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen..
Suck ice and do cool water rinses..
Avoid spicy food..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
