It was so bad that it took my breath away every time I cramped. the pain resided and it went on like a pretty normal period just a little heaviest than usual. It ended Wednesday and now I m bleeding again. I also have this weird twinge around the left side of my belly button not sure if they are related but both are bugging me...can t help but feel like something is wrong.

Hi

First of all, let me explain you about the causes for menstrual cramps. During the time of menstrual period, the uterus contracts to expel its lining. Hormones like Prostaglandins are involved in pain and inflammation. Sometimes, higher level of prostaglandins are associated with more severe uterine contractions. Also, you forgot to mention your age and other associated symptoms like prolonged bleeding.

If you are a teenager and only troubled by menstrual pain, you may take Mefenamic acid tablets 500mg TDS during your cycle. If you are married and are also experiencing prolonged menses, you may require Oral Contraceptive pills. Sometimes, uterine fibroids may aggravate menstrual cramps and bleeding; in this case, you should pay visit to your GP for necessary tests.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
