What Causes Memory Loss?

my mom is 84 years old and in the last year she has been told that she has memory loss. It has got so bad that she hardly talks anymore because she can't think of the words she needs to complete a sentence. She gets easily confused. Is this just memory loss or something more?

Dear Sir/Mam,
I understand your concerns about your mother situation.
Your mother has dementia, and along with dementia confusion is very common.
The important causes to consider in this situation al Alzheimer disease and vascular dementia, however many other etiologies can cause this situation though not as much frequent.
Alzheimer disease is the most common reason with gradual decrease in the cognitive function of your mother, the treatment consists to give anticholinesterase.
Vascular dementia is due to multiple infarcts in the brain that causes a escalating decrease in the cognitive function and it is usually associated with diabetes and dyslipidemia, the treatment consists to treat hypertension, diabetes and give statins.
Unfortunately these cases are not reversible.
Family support is very important to help your mother do the basic daily needs like eating, going to the bathroom, preventing falls.
Best regards
