What Causes Memory Loss And Confusion?

My dad, who is 84 has just come to live with my son and I. He has been active his whole life. He is now showing signs of memory loss and confusion. He is always cold, he gets tired very quickly, has been nauseas and vomiting on and off since January this year. He complains of a tight chest sometimes (he does take a heart pill every day which helps). He does not urinate very often at all and when he does it is a very dark tea colour. He walks very slowly and his balance is not good at all. He says that he feels a pulse in his groins to be very very strong sometimes.

Your father needs to be seen by a doctor. He has a number of symptoms for which he needs to see a doctor. Confusion and memory loss may be a sign of dementia, however, if he is medically unwell, these may be indicative of delirium. Nausea and vomiting may indicate infection or a problem in the gastrointestinal tract. Is he losing weight or demonstrating a change in bowel habits? A "tight chest" could be indicative of a heart problem or could tie in with the nausea and vomiting as a disorder of the gastrointestinal tract may manifest in this way. If he is not urinating often enough and his urine is dark, he may have a urinary infection or his kidneys could be functioning poorly. He needs to be seen by a doctor for a thorough examination and further investigations including blood tests and urine tests.
