What causes low oxygen saturation and excessive mouth secretions in a child?
My daughter was born at 24 weeks gestation. She is now 3 weeks old adjusted. She is still on home oxygen. The last few days she has had a few episodes of excessive secretions to the point that she is choking on it and her sats have dropped to the 30 s and 40 s on 2 occasions with bubbles just rolling out of her mouth. What could be causing this? Could this be related to her chronic lung disease?
Detailed answer : Your baby is born at 24 weeks that is born very prematurely. In premature babies the lungs are not developed fully, so sometimes may develop apnea. If 27 weeks baby has 3 apnea episodes while on oxygen then he needs to be hospitalised. I hope this has helped you. Take care. Regards - Dr Deepak Patel, MD Pediatrics
