What Causes Low Hemoglobin?

my 75 year old father has a condition that doesn't allow his blood cells to differentiate. as a result, his haemoglobin is very low and he gets regular blood transfusions. lately, even after being transfused 3 units of blood, his haemoglobin levels were still 44. (i understand normal for males is roughly 130 to 180) my question is how low can levels get and what will happen to my dad?

Based on your query, my opinion is as follows.
1. Not sure about the condition, you father is suffering from.
2. Possible bone marrow aplasia. Transfusion should improve unless immune hemolysis is happening.
3. Meet a immunohematologist to get appropriate transfusion. Try to maintain the donor pool small, so that numerous antibodies are not formed.
4. At present hemoglobin is too low and he will require packed cell transfusion. If more details are available, detailed opinion can be given.
