What Causes Low Grade Fever Along With Sore Throat And Headache?

My 17 year old has a low grade fever, severe sore throat, chills and headache, and now eye discharge. We went to urgent care yesterday and the strep test was negative as was an influenza and mono test. The nurse practitioner said to get retested for mono if he doesn t feel better in a week but I am wondering if a new test would reveal mono after 2 more days or if I need to wait longer? He has been sleeping all day and night for the last 2 days as well. Thanks, Melissa

Hi,

If the mono test is negative I don't think we need to repeat it in 2 days as it's unlikely to change. It may be a viral flu. It is better to wait for a few days rather then repeating the test.

Hope I have answered your question. I will be glad to answer any further questions about this.
