Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been taking zytiga for the past fourteen months. My PSA initially dropped from 50 to 4.6 and then gradually began to rise. In October, a scan showed no change in any lesions after a year, but my PSA was at 11 by then so it was suggested that I prepare for Chemo after Christmas. In late October, and again ion November 23rd, my PSA was at 13.6 for both readings. All good news. Then on December 19th I was placed on amoxicillin and magic mouthwash for a one week treatment because of osteonecrosis. A PSA test on December 27th showed an increase to 21.3. Is it possible that an antibiotic could cause an increase in a PSA reading? Or am I clutching at straws here?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Zytiga is composed of abiraterone, which works by reducing androgen production in the body. Androgens are male hormones that can promote tumor growth in the prostate gland. Zytiga is used together with Prednisone to treat prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. Since your PSA levels seems to be fluctuating, I would advise you to get evaluated by consulting your doctor as to know what could be the cause. You may need few investigations to confirm the diagnosis.
Hope I have answered your query.
