What Causes Loose Stools With Mucous And Bad Smell?

Hello. I m very concerned about new symptoms that have made themselves known gradually over the last year or so (on top of already exhibiting IBD symptoms but unable to diagnose). The most recent symptoms include watery and loose bowel movements, leakage of mucous preceding a bowel movement, a large amount of mucous accompanying bowel movements - both long and thin like a worm and in clumps, a foul stench (similar to a dogs anal glands) and discomfort with bowel movements and abdominal pain. This is in addition to my typical symptoms that I ve experienced over the last 15 years, very similar to typical IBD. the stench, discomfort and large amounts of mucous have me very concerned & I m interested in getting a doctors thoughts on that, especially. Thank you - Cynthia

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history suffering fro IBD and on the top of that have started lots of mucus in stool and very bad smell.
The cause can be changes in the large bowel secreting the extra mucus the disease is producing.
I would advise you the following:
Send the sample of stool daily for 3 consecutive days.
Colonoscopy and biopsy.
A course of an antibiotic, metronidazole and probiotics
Further treatment if required as per the findings of the lab and colonoscopy biopsy findings.
I find this answer helpful
