What Causes Lesions On Brain And On Lungs When Suffering From Lymphoma?

My 61 yr old brother has non-hodgkins lymphoma and was diagnosed 7 years ago. He was in remission for almost 2 1/2 years until about 3 months ago. He has had #2 of 6 rounds of chemo this time, but has been very ill for the last 2 months and is now hospitalized. The cat scan showed lesions on the brain and on his lungs, but the doctors are saying they don't know what the lesions are. His oncologist has been called (but is about 1 & 1/2 hours away from the hospital where my brother is) and said he couldn't make recommendations or offer any advice without an MRI, which my brother is refusing to get done right now. Both red and white cell counts are low and 2 units of blood were being administered this morning, however, temperature went up and they discontinued it because of fever. Can you tell me if you think the lesions are cancer that has spread to the brain. My niece said someone from the oncologist's office says they don't think so. I'm looking for a professional, honest answer so I know how to best work with family members and my bother's ongoing treatment.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

CT scan of brain and chest will determine only whether the lesion in lungs and brain are cancerous or not. If the lesion looks suspicious in scan then biopsy had to be done to rule out malignancy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
