What Causes Leg Cramps?

I have been getting leg cramps of and on for about six months. I drink plenty of water and eat bananas often. I sometimes get cramps on the side of my legs just above the ankle, sometimes in the calf muscles and sometimes on the thighs. This is not during times of exercise or heavy activity.
